Coming up with a successful model to make video content freely available on the internet while still making a decent profit is an important prospect. Advertising revenue is quite low in the video sector while bandwidth costs run very high. This is a tricky situation to make money in, and some of the existing systems such as pay walls and pay per view may not be the best options.
While pay walls make content beyond a certain point inaccessible without paying, pay per view requires viewers to make a one off payment for one view. Both these systems seem to be on the decline as fewer people are happy to pay for their content.
Pay per view seems to fail because not many people are willing to pay for content they haven't got even a glimpse of! Paying beforehand for something you haven't seen sounds counterintuitive, and this works against the system. So making something entirely inaccessible is clearly not the way forward.
Some other sites use the limited time model which allows only a certain viewing period for free. Viewers who wish to watch uninterrupted must opt for a paid service. This seems to be a more successful model as someone who has already viewed some content will be more willing to pay for the remaining then someone who hasn't seen anything.
Pay per view may still be used by some sites but it is certainly not the best way to continue into the future. Clever alternatives need to be incorporated and relied upon.
